Diana explores the fragility of the earth and of the individual through drawing and painting which informs developments into sculpture and installation. Physical locations are ever-changing environments, a metaphor for cause and effect in emotional landscapes.
Influenced by personally significant places where memory plays a significant part, views are altered by a glimpse of light or a fleeting shadow. Conditions shape cloud formations and cause water to form trickles or torrents – or to disappear.
Diana is inspired by the idea that, no matter how ancient the land, it is constantly being renewed by the layering of seasons and human interactions. Often her process is a negotiation between herself and the materials. She uses traditional methods to make drawings and paintings as well as using found objects from the site to apply ink or paint, layering light, form and movement.
Diana’s work represents times of stillness in places that are special to her, spent in that active but restful state of observing and responding to the moment. During these studies she is constantly reminded of the writings and artwork of Herman de Vries in ‘Chance and Change’, and the way he expresses his observations.
A single tree may have lived for hundreds of years, sheltered generations of people and provided a home for countless creatures. A single leaf represents a passing season through its growth and decay. These ideas of scale in time and place can draw together physical and individual, emotional locations.
